Autograph Letter Signed, “William H. Shaw” 124th New York Infantry, 3p. octavo, September 15, 1862, with cover, it reads in part: “...we are encamped on the sacred soil of Virginia. Zeb...went out on a scouting party and one man got wounded...there is a battle going on some where today for we can hear the roar of the cannon distinctly...a report came in camp that the rebels was right on to us. The Regt. was drawn up in line of battle. Some of the boys was dreadfuly scared one poor fellow came near fainting...How soon we go to battle I do not know but I think very soon because our Col is a fighting man he will do all he can...I have talked with several soldiers they say if McDowell is their leader they will fight no more, says he caused their defeat, some regts that went in the field with 1000 men can not muster 200 men...” Torn at top before being written on by the author as he writes around the loss. Includes a second letter on the burial of Zeb, in part “his grave I marked his name regt. company state, he is buryed 8 miles from Aquia Creek by railroad up to a post marked 41...he was buryed in a coffin which the most of them do not get...” (3 items)
