War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles E. Putnam [KIA Williamsburg, Va., 5/05/62], Co. H, 2nd New Hampshire Vols., "Camp Sullivan, [Washington], July 9, 1861", in part: "…we are under marching orders now…the cooks have been to work most of the night and had three days rations prepared for us…the men were ordered to have everything ready…yesterday I…went through the Patent office, the Smithsonian Institute and went into the White House…got up to the Capitol and…found out that they had just adjourned so I took a seat in front of the National [Hotel] to review the crowd as they passed up the street, saw some very smart looking men…the Rhode Island flying artillery [William T. Sherman's command] meet with a sad accident this morning. As they were out practicing with one of their rifle cannon a shell exploded killing two men and wounding five…the shell was caped which is country to orders…there are a good many sick with the dysentery…it is caused by drinking too much water. The water here is not good…we are to march tomorrow…the men are all anxious to go. If we get a chance at the Rebels we wont disgrace New Hampshire…". Near fine.
