War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Charles E. Putnam [KIA Williamsburg, Va., 5/05/62], Co. H, 2nd New Hampshire Vols., "Camp Beaufort, Headquarters 2nd N. H., Dec. 3, 1861", in part: "…to write you a few lines to let you know how we are getting along…in this land of tobacco and nigroes…to have Thanksgiving dinner eight of us put in and got two turkeys…we got a woman that lives near the camp to cook them for us…if you could have seen us you would thought that Uncle Sam's Soldiers knew how to devour roast turkey. One thing is for sure. We did not want any of his rations…I think I should be willing to spend 10 or 12 years in the army…the roads here are getting very bad…we hear the Rebels on the other side [of the Potomac] banging away. We dropped the cards and started to see what was up. Found them at their old tricks firing at one of our schooners. They did not hit her and she kept on up the river…they are poor shots, but they have some good guns. Our battery from this side thrower over few shells…they struck pretty near where theirs came from. They did not return them…I heard that the N. H. Fifth was in Virginia. Heard from George (my brother) [WIA Gettysburg & KIA Cold Harbor, Va., 6/03/64]…he was well and stood it first rate…I remain…yours truly C. E. Putnam High private in Co. H, 2nd Regt. N. H. Vol., Hooker's Brig. left wing of the Grand Army of the Potomac …". Also included is a short letter from August 28, 1861 in which Putman says they are getting ready to march. Both VG to near fine. (2 letters.)
