A rare war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery published by Mumford & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, written by Pvt. Samuel T. MacDonald, Co. C, 22nd Illinois Vols. "Camp Lyon, Bird's Point, Mo., January 9, 1862", concerning the small but costly skirmish of Charleston, Missouri on January 8, 1862 and of being part of Grant's reconnaissance in force into Kentucky, in part: "…we have just returned from a tramp to Charleston, [Missouri]. We left the Point of Tuesday…and took the cars for Charleston and went as far as we could on the cars and then set out on foot. We got to within a short distance of the town and came in contact with a few secesh…a short conflict ensued in which we lost 6 men killed and 20 wounded. The loss of the secesh is unknown. I don't think they lost any. We have orders to march at 12 o'clock today with 5 days rations and…60 rounds of cartridges. There is 4 regiments going besides Taylor's Battery and three or four companies of cavalry. All these are going from the Point. I don't know how many are going from Cairo…we are going out through Kentucky…we will have to storm Columbus before we get back…the mud is half leg deep all around here…we have got new guns. We have the French Rifle Musket…". Light toning, else VG.
