A ultra rare, partly-printed, Valverde Campaign New Mexico Volunteer's military document, 1p. oblong 4to., being a Requisition for Forage for Public Horses issued to Co. B, 4th New Mexico Mounted Volunteers, signed twice and made official by their Captain Julian Aragon y Perea, at Santa Fe, New Mexico for the period of Feb. 24-28, 1862. The 4th New Mexico was organized at Fort Union, N. M. in September 1861. They remained at Fort Union until February 1862 when the marched to join Col. Kit Carson and his 1st New Mexico Volunteers at the battle of Valverde (their colonel was Gabriel Paul who, as general, lost both eyes at Gettysburg.) which took place on February 21, 1862, incidentally this battle took place only three days before the period covered in this document and no doubt this forage was needed to help refresh their horses from the grueling campaign. Near fine
