War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. John B. Brant [WIA Jackson, Miss., 7/15/63], Co. B., 11th New Hampshire Vols., Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 21, 1862, to his mother. Apparently, Brant is writing her for the first time after his August 1862 enlistment, in part: "…we had a hard battle at Fredericksburg City, Va. on the 13 of this month. We lost two hundred and twenty brave men in that battle. I belong to the 11th Regiment N. H. Brother Levi [W. Bran, 3rd Maine] and me is spared as yet. Thank the almighty. I hope this dreadful war will end soon. I go and see brother Levi often…rite to my wife, dear mother be kind to her. She lives in Raymond, N. H…she did not want me to enlist. I thought it my duty to…do the best I can…". VG
