The 118th New York Prepares To Go To War-Passing Muster & An Early DeathA good pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frederick C. Hale (both signed Fred C. Hale), Co. F, 118th New York. The first is headed: "Plattsburgh Barracks, [New York], Aug. 18, 62", in part: "…Byron has rec'd. an appointment in the navy…I was examined on Friday & passed…there were only 4 out of 62 rejected. We will be mustered in today. It is whispered that the Regt is to leave a week from Tuesday…Mr. Hascall is here now & at the barracks frequently…I will get a few photographs taken in citizen's clothes. You remember that Methodist minister Conger. He is here as a private in our Co. We are enjoying ourselves a great deal better than we expected & are all well…". The second is headed: "Camp Wool, [Baltimore], Oct. 23, [62], 11 o'clock A. M.]," in part: "…poor [La Rhette L.] Thompson died this morning about 8 o'clock. We have known that he couldn't live long for sometime but his death is a severe blow to us as ever breathed. We are on the point of leaving for somewhere. We have all packed up & are ready….the general supposition…is Washington…". Both near fine
