A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frederick C. Hale (signed Fred C. Hale), Co. F, 118th New York, "Camp near Fort Ethan Allen, Va., Dec. 7, 1862," in part: "…winter began in earnest…we started out on fatigue, but when we got to the tool house the chief engineer said we need not work so we came back…it is terribly cold…and the wind and snow [blows hard]…I send a melainotype of myself taken just after we had got in from fatigue as you will perceive by the dress. You will perceive by comparing with the photographs…taken at Plattsburgh that there has been considerable fat and some whiskers added to the cheeks. If you should want to see the other boot you will perceive it by taking off the border. I thought you would prefer a picture taken as this…to one taken in my dress coat & trappings. One of the tents has just burned down and one of the boys that lived in it has been here for lodging…there are not as many sick here as there were at Camp Wool…Old Rogers is pretty badly off…it is doubtful whether he ever gets well…he has a tumor…Dr. Porteous says, growing in his stomach and…has also [a] cataract in one of his eyes…".
