War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Frederick C. Hale (signed Fred C. Hale), Co. F, 118th New York, on "Head Quarters Norfolk and Portsmouth" stationery, Norfolk, Va., Feb. 11, 1864, in part: "…there is a cavalry captain who is stationed…here…who has his wife with him. She dresses in men's clothes and rides every where with him 'Mary Gibson fashion.' She is only seventeen and is very pretty and well connected. There are a member of the Co. here who knew here at home…I sen doe an ambrotype that a dagarean artist, an acquaintance of mine, took at Getty's Station…[He] gave it to me a few days ago. Most of the boys think it is better than the photographs…". VG.
