War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Frederick C. Hale (signed Fred C. Hale), Co. F, 118th New York, Mar. 9, 1864, in part: "…there was quite an excitement in Ports'th…occasioned by Kilpatrick's expedition [in which Col. Urlic Dahlgren was killed] arriving here. I found in it Lieut. Barker from Crownpoint…he makes a splendid officer, is said to be brave as a lion…he saw Harry Stone at Yorktown & that the major of his regt (the 5th N. Y. Cavalry) was going to prefer charges against him [Stone] for desertion. In that case he may make as you say a figure in the world…I hope he wont prefer the charges as I didn't think Harry meant anything bad in deserting and only did it through recklessness…". VG
