Group of four letters by Thomas P. Ford, 157th New York Infantry, killed on May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, includes: ALS, 4p. octavo, Centerville, Virginia, December 6, 1862, in part: “...O how many victims this great war claims day by day, they are carryed away to lonely graves. We mustered 83 men when we marched from Hamilton now not more than 60 could be got into the ranks. 10 of our most stoulert men from the [?] of the compnay have sickened & been carryed to the hospital & but few probably will ever return, but we have been used harder than most regiments for we were put right in to the field & when we were not marching we are drilled every day in order to keep up our end with the old regiments....we peformed and maneuvered before General Seigle & staff & lots of other dutchmen with shining shoulder straps. We had to march & counter march double quick & charge bayonet fire by company fire by battalion, fire by file, march in line of battle & wheel into column form, hollow square & resist cavalry....” VG...plus; ALS, Camp Near Stafford, Va, April 5, 1863, which closes with “You must burn this letter for I say it only to you...”...plus; The other two letters deal with camp news, etc. All About VG.
