War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed Geo. P. Jarvis), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Huntsville, Ala., May 13, 1862, in part: "…planting cotton is coming up finely and painters say looks well…the planters are generally very rich here. Some of them own…six hundred slaves. The wealthiest man in town is from New Hampshire worth $1,000,000. There is several families here who are all relatives of his and from the same neighborhood who are all united like Shakers and are worth about $5,000,000…the ruins of the house in which [CSA] Gen. [Leroy P.] Walker the filibuster lived are still standing. The house was a beautiful one and finely situated. By some meaning it caught fire and was entirely consumed except the walls which are of brick…the news we get is from a Nashville paper. A kind of a would be secesh if it dared…paper…the enclosed letter is one that I picked up. The writer…was a member of Hindman's Legion. The same we shelled at Bowling Green. It seems from his letter that they were not whipped. They only ran to prevent…a catastrophe. He is wrong as regards the number killed as there was not a person killed during the whole cannonade. It will give you a pretty good idea of Southern intellect…". The original transmittal cover, endorsed by Chaplain Erastus A. Strong 3rd Ohio, is included. VG
