War-date Union soldier's letter, 4p. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], (signed Geo. three times), Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Corinth, Miss., May 10, 1863, in part: "…you had better direct to Corinth Miss Post Hospital where I am now detailed…[as] clerk…I cannot hear a word about the Regt and don't expect to till I hear of their capture, but for heavens sake don't say this to any one…there is a chance of our Regt returning safe. The last we heard…about two weeks ago. They were far in the rear of Bragg in Ala. and were burning everything in the shape of combustible property…all the grain in the whole country through which they passed that they did not want…they burned and carried off all the horses and mules and pretty much all the cattle…they are bound to accomplish the object of the expedition…Corinth is certainly the last place in the world…its chief products are negroes and rats…I never saw a place where the soldiers were as saucy and the negroes as plenty and the rats as large and bold. There is now at Corinth a theatre and a band of Negro minstrels, both of which…crowd houses every evening. I was satisfied with the sight of one exhibition of each. The surrounding country is fit for nothing…being almost on all sides an almost impenetrable swamp…we are just getting glorious news of the war in the east. 'Go in Hooker. Your a trump.'…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
