A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. F, 21st Indiana Vols., [later captain 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], Camp Carrollton, La., Aug. 29, 1862, in part: "…at Camp Parapet we were under Genl. [John W.] Phelps. Now we are under Col. Payne of the 4th Wisc. The 21st, 4th Wisc. & 14th maine is in this brigade. We are camped at the lower edge of Carrollton among the live oaks…tis where [the] Secesh were camped…our wounded officers and men are getting well and coming to camp. Some have died. Some their legs & arms amputated…our Regt has 50 contrabands to do the fatigue work. Thank ___ I am not their driver if I do have them to feed…". The original transmittal cover is included. Near fine
