Autograph Letter Signed, 2p. folio, July 14, 1862, On Board the Steamer Vanderbilt In the Gulf Stream off the coast of N.C., with cover addressed to Harry Harner of Lancaster, Penn., and includes a wonderful hand colored & inked map, 1p. 9-3/4”x16”, depicting the Port Royal Island region of South Carolina, detailing the various Rebel pickets, as well as Union force placements, designated by Union flags and a 1st National. This highly detailed rendering also depicts the Rice Plantation, Bridge torn down by the Rebels May 28, 1862, Battlefield Jan. 1, 1862, Charleston & Savannah Rail Road, and various homes of prominent citizens. The letter reads in part: “...I am on my way to Richmond Va. to join McClellan’s Army. On Thursday evening...the Regiment went on Board the Steamer Bendeferd and left Beaufort...we got our baggage & c. shipped aboard the Vanderbilt, and on Sunday morning the Regt. was marched aboard also, the 8th Michigan...” Both items are Fine.
