A good pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 6pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams, Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., to his wife concerning their preparations to advance on the enemy at Goldsboro, N. C., in part: "…[Foster's Barracks, Newbern, N. C., Dec. 8, 1862]…Banks has landed where we did with twenty thousand men….I think he is going to Richmond…[Newbern, Dec. 9]…we have received orders to prepare to march with three days cooked rations…we [may] go to Weldon or some other point on the grand artery of communication between Richmond and the South…I hate to leave and shrink from the hardships and danger of this unknown journey…a force of several thousand has…landed in Newbern who are to go with us…whatever befalls me, always believe my true to you and…let my children…belief that their father was governed by his own convictions…".
