War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed your loving husband Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Newbern, N. C., Dec. 29, 1862, in part: "…I have taken this sheet which I carried…through eleven days march and…in a battle…we shall…go into the city which is…desirable…our colonel [Augustus Brown Reed Sprague future BBG] has been appointed provost marshall…we shall be permanently located there in the houses of the city…there may be an expedition soon. I shall hire a colored man to carry my things if I go again. Two or three dollars would cover the expense but I will pay more rather than bear such load again…".
