War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed your own Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Newbern, N. C., Jan. 4-5, 1863, in part: "…Capt. Kimball arrived today and looks very well. The company seemed very glad to see him as their ill will has died away…if we go by water the gun boats will fight for us…I don't know Mrs. Walden's direction…her boy [Pvt. Charles H. Walden] is well and is a very quiet and good soldier…[Jan. 5 1863 nearly noon]…last night I fully expected orders for our regiment to join the expedition which…is about to start. Instead we had orders to furnish two companies for picket duty west of the city…this is the last sheet of Expedition paper…". VG
