War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Newbern, N. C., Jan. 13, 1863, in part: "…our brigade composed of the 43, 45 and 51, tow companies of New York Cavalry and Belger's famous R. I. Battery being attached are still waiting with rations and everything in readiness for a start…our regiment has three companies on picket and out of the seven here a hundred are unable to march…the Tigers (43rd Mass.) looked about as small on drill…so did the Cadets (45th Mass.)…we are to form a kind of guard to the ambulance train…already in part started…the 23rd struck tents and departed today…we may…make a feint west or south of Newbern while the main army is going to attack Wilmington or Weldon. The other regiments are starting with…15 to 40 days rations…I am content but hate suspense. I have engaged a Darky, shall pay him perhaps $2.00 depends on what he does for me. Ask Edward to send me at once $5.00…the captain is here and very well…the men are in good spirits but anxious for peace…there must be…35,000 soldiers in and around Newbern…who are going to do something soon…I have been to a prayer meeting this evening…I read two sermons Sunday. The Life of Adj. [Frazar A.] Stearns [21st Mass. KIA New Bern, 3/14/62]…the chaplain [37 year-old Gilbert Cummings, Jr.] has been unwell most of the time and is a dull row[?] at best. He has spoken to us but once in Newbern…and with few words…sixty pieces of artillery have been planting this evening commanding the bridge over the Trent [river] about forty rods from our quarters. Last night…one of our pickets was shot at twice. Longstreet is believed somewhere near with a large army and the rebels…and they may be threatening to attack…I should prefer to fight here rather than tramp half dead and then fight…Newbern is no place for the Rebels. It is strongly fortified and they dread…things as forts…". VG
