War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., "in Barracks," [Newbern, N. C.], "Tues. evening, eight o'clock," [Jan. 13, 1863], in part: "…some regiments have started already with fifteen days rations and some…with forty…our the first Brigade, Col. Amory commanding composed of the 'Tigers' (43 Mass.), the Cadets (45 Mass.) and 51st with Belger's Battery and two companies of N. Y. Cavalry…are not to do much in the main business of the Expedition…we may…reconnoiter or make a feint in the vicinity while the rest go off to do the great work…we are to form a guard to the ambulance train…extra precautions have been taken at the bridges near us, more cannon planted and the rumor have been…Longstreet is in the state with an army. One of the 51 on picket was shot at last night…but not hit. Some stray scout…near perhaps or somebody trying to scare us…the rebels may attack us here…we are ready for them…there is fight in us if attacked…I've engaged a stout black boy…to help me when we…go…Wed. evening. We have orders to start tomorrow morning…". VG
