War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Newbern, N. C., Jan. 15, 1863, in part: "…this morning after a great fuss packing up everything, loading up my servant with rations…we Co. K were paraded before our quarters then marched into a field where the regiment always paraded. The other regiments, 45 (Cadets), 43 (Tigers) the two Cos. [3rd] N. Y. Cav. going with us and the four cannon, the army wagons, the ambulances, everything belonging to the "Pomp and Circumstances of War" were drawn up in line…and received orders to return to our quarters…to be ready at a moments warning…our brigade is going…to Newton or Polksville to cut the RR…the general in command knows what we are to do…our numerous defeats…I get sick of the war…we had better step it and go on some other course…[or] this horrible fruit of slavery…must be eaten and digested by us but eight this results that it seems to act only indirectly…in freeing the slaves. The President's Proclamation is just right…let the army and navy do as he commands, but will they? Under McClellan, Burnside, Banks or Foster. Rosecrans seems to have won a great victory but…this war is not to be fought out by one or two victories where the enemy escapes to fight us again as they always done…". VG
