War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., New Bern, N. C., Jan. 27, 1863, in part: "…the great expedition…is organized and perhaps gone ere this to Charleston…a…large number of troops will be left to protect Newbern whose fortifications…have been and are being greatly strengthened…a colored regiment is being formed…and the blacks enlist a hundred in a day…I have scarcely seen a woman or child since leaving Boston, but got a glimpse of a little one…this A. M. in an army wagon. Strange sight…". VG
