War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., [n. p., but New Bern, N. C.], Jan. 28, 1863, in part: "A trifling matter occurred last night which I wish to tell…Lieut. Howe came in…evidently excited, asked me aside and wished to know whether I had ever written to Blackstone that he had 'abused' me during the Goldsboro march, saying that Elliot wrote to the Capt…that that was the report. I was innocent…having never written to anybody expect you who if I had written thus would have been too judos to circulate it. Lieut. H. has always treated me well and even offer to carry my gun when I was unwell which…I declined. He never reproved me nor spoke uncivilly to me…always took pains to be friendly…he was vexed last night and I am sorry for this is a bad place to get the ill will of a commissioned officer. If such a ridiculous story still circulates use your own judgement about contradicting it. I may have written that I thought the Capt. could have secured me a ride which Howe tried to do without success…Howe did all he could I'm certain…I shall simply deny and let him enjoy his belief…".
