War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Braddock's Point, Hilton Head, South Carolina, July 18, 1862, in part: "…we left james Island the first day of July…we had orders to…relieve a company of the 45th PA…it is the season of water melons and green corn etc. and we can get as much as we chase off the negroes at a very reasonable price…the last night before we left there I was on picket…and in sight of the outer post of the rebel pickets. Tuesday evening a couple of rebels came down within a short distance of my post and let drive but their guns misfired. So they didn't hit me…I returned the fire but they ran so fast that I didn't hit them…Fort Pulaski can be plainly seen…and by the aide of the spyglass…we can distinctly see a man on the ramparts and count the guns…while at James Island I got a very good view of Fort Sumter from the top of a tree. I thought as I looked at it of the suffering of the brave and noble Anderson and those with him as he struggled to keep the flag waving…I could plainly se the staff from which his flag waved and would…rejoice …to see those stars and bars removed and the stars and stripes put in their place…".
