War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Hilton Head, South Carolina, April 23, 1863, in part: "…I will not write all the details of our movements since we left this island…the talk is that we are going as body guard to acting major general…it is hard to tell what the movements will be as we have to work pretty shy for fear of the enemies knowing what we are about…you spoke about my being changed into Co. D. A part of our company went into Co. A and a part into Co. D when we went to burn the bridge on the mainland but it was only for the expedition. The reasoner that was that they wanted 6 whole companies and so they split up a part of the companies and filled up those 6…". VG
