War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (unsigned, but complete), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Morris Island, S. C., Oct. 25, 1863, in part: "…on arriving at Boston & looked round…for the rest of the boys…went over to Lawrence Depot…arrived at Groton…took the steamer Plymouth Rock…arrived in New York…went directly to the New England rooms…got our transportation passes to Port Royal …in the forenoon I went down to Barnum's Museum…I started off alone for Central Park…came to 3rd Avenue & took the horse cars and went about 4 miles up the city…I did not go to church…in the afternoon we had preaching in the building…and [had] a better discourse…as I ever heard delivered. The text was 'Pray without ceasing.' A number of ladies was present…besides the soldiers…after the sermon a dispatch was read announcing that a battle was going on between 'Lee and Meade'…this created quite an excitement among us…we got ready to take the boat…before we got started all the firemen on the boat struck for higher wages and went ashore but they came back on receiving what they called for and after they all got back…the deck hands took it in their heads that they must get better wages …but the officers talked to them a while and persuaded them to go as they were so they concluded to do so. As we passed down the harbor we had a fine view of the Russian fleet which lay at anchor in the North [Hudson] river, it looked finely…we had to take a schooner in tow …and towed it clear to Hilton Head loaded with cattle. Just as we we[re] leaving the harbor one of the 67th Ohio…jumped overboard and tried to drowned himself but a schooner which was coming out of the harbor picked him up…we had very poor quarters on the Arago as she was heavily loaded and had a great many passengers…besides us soldiers…I was as usual some sea sick…Capt. Ela [KIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., May 13, 1864] is back to the company as the Sharpshooters have been disbanded…". Also, included is the original transmittal cover. Plus:…a war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., (signed M. L. Holt), Braddock's Point, Hilton Head, S. C., August 1, 1862 to his mother indicating that, "I am now 17 years old…today" with other interesting camp news. Both very good to near fine. (2 letters.)
