War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. H.), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., "Camp Grant, Va.," April 19, 1864, in part: "…yesterday we crossed the Potomac and went into camp. Our camp is about 2 miles from the Potomac and is very pleasant…all of the New England veterans are coming here…and it are going to be formed into a veteran corps…there will be some tall fighting here before many months. There are troops arriving here from most every department…2 or 3 trains of cars loaded with troops arrive in Washington every day…I shall like soldering in this state better than I did in South Carolina for we are…rid of sand and fleas…the 4th N. H. is encamped close by…and…we are to be organized together as one Regt. I feel rather sorry that Ned and I must be separated but it is all for the best and I feel willing to leave him in the hands of God for I feel that he has learned to trust in a hand that is mightier than mans…".
