War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. H.), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., "Gloucester Point, Va.," May 1, 1864, in part: "…my heart goes out…to Him…when He permitted me to take my dear brother by the hand and to find him the same noble youth that I left him…dear parents…if God…sees fir to call your sons & brothers from this earth away take consolation from the thought that they died like men…the Regt arrived here last Thursday…they were dismounted at jacksonville Florida and will not be mounted again…our company arrived without the Spencer 7 shooters and the rest of the regt arrived with new Springfield muskets. We were reviewed yesterday by General B. F. Butler and will probably be on the move before long…we have got shelter tents and Ned [brother Edward B. Holt] tents with me…we shall have some long marches before long but if we can only crush out this thing this year I shall be willing to suffer for a while…we left Camp Grant Monday & marched to Alexandria…Yorktown is across the river from here…we…could see the position of the forces during the siege by McClellan…". VG to near fine.
