War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Major Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., "Near Laurel Hill before Richmond, Nov. 28, 1864," to brother Edward, in part: "…I was glad to hear that you was well and had arrived safely at the hospital…we…have got our winter quarters most done…are built of logs and are very good with fire places in each…are put up large enough to accommodate 6 men and are covered with shelter [tents]…all the duty that the boys have now is picket once in every four or five nights and a little fatigue…Lieut. Hazen is here now but expects to go home soon after getting his discharge…about our tour to New York…we went there and laid rounding the harbor a few days, on a boat, while election was going on so that in case of a riot or any [other] disturbance we could land and 'waid in.' But everything passed off quietly and after laying there until the..11th we ran down to Fort Richmond on Staten Island and went ashore, here laid until the afternoon of the 14th when we again embarked and returned to this place, feeling glad to get back here again…". VG to near fine.
