War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Major Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., "Near Laurel Hill before Richmond, Nov. 29, 1864," in part: "…in regard to our movements and present position which is the same as when we left for New York…we have had some disagreeable weather and this…with our exposure for want of good quarters has caused a good deal of suffering and complaint…every six men in the company have a house together with a fire place…where is Sherman? This is the question which troubles so many at this time and which so terribly alarms the perpetrators of this awful rebellion…when Sherman gets through with his present campaign that rebel stock will be rather at a discount and the future of this rebellion will look darker still…the Southern people will rue the day that they ever rebelled against the best government that the world ever saw…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG to near fine.
