A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by 2nd Lieut. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Goldsboro, N. C., June 29,1865, in part: "…Col. Bedel [Brevet Brig. Gen. John Bedel] & Capt. Giddeons [George H. Giddings] sent in their resignations…and they both came back disapproved…I do not think it [is] a very fair thing to keep us so long while others are going home, who have not been out half the time that we have, but they probably know what they are about…our '62 men started for home last Sunday…our adjutant went home with them and in his absence I am acting adjutant…few there are of my age which hold the position which I now occupy as a military officer…there is one thing which I would like and that is…a nice sash…remember an officers sash color red…". VG to near fine.
