A great war-date CDV of Captain Richard Ela of Company E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols. who was killed in that regiment's most bloody battle of Drewry's Bluff, Va., on May 13, 1864. In that battle the regiment lost over 150 men. This image is inscribed by Marquis L. Holt, on the front: "A Gentleman. A patriot. A Hero & A Scholar." While on the verso, he writes, in full: "Capt. Richard Ela, Co. E 3rd N. H. Vols. who fell nobly at the head of his company in the battle of Manchester Hill, Va., May 13th 1864." Photographer's imprint n the verso of Kimball & Son, Concord, N. H. with a blue two-cent tax stamp. Near fine.
