A good war-date Union non-commissioned officer's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant John S. Eyler, Co. A, 99th Ohio Vols., "Battle Field near Murfreesboro, Tenn., Jan. 5, 1863", in part: "After a hard fought battle and the loss of a great many lives on boath side…we have had seven days fighting with the rebels and out of that time we had three days and one night hard fighting but finally we succeeded in routing the rebels. They was well fortified…and fought well=they evacuated Murfreesboro on Saturday night. We will march for there today. Our forces have been marching …on last Wednesday the hardest days fight was…it commenced before daylight and lasted till dark…on New Years day they had hard fighting with the picket guards & on friday morning they commenced on our left wing…the firing kept getting warmer until one o'clock when the rebels made a dash on our brigade. They had five brigades & we had one. They came so closely that we retreated back to our reinforcements and then the tide changed. We then commenced driving the rebels back & drove them out of their entrenchments & captured four pieces of artillery [?] loss in our regiment is great…the loss in our company was twelve killed & wounded & three missing…the killed was our Capt. Wm. Scott & Jesse Spark & Ruben Hamilton…the wounded [were] George Shafer & Solomon Swap…the rest you are not acquainted with…I had three ball hole shot in my coat & pants…".
