A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert M. C. Watson, Co. D, 39th Ohio Vols., Corinth, Miss., Jan. 24, 1863, in part: "…if it rains…as it has the past month [the] U. S. will have to put this army in Gun boats or I think some of them will drowned…I don't uphold deserting but…I cant blame them much altho we have not lost any except some new recruit, as the boys say ninety two dollar men. There has been about thirty of them deserted. Shooting is too good for them…the roads have been so very bad…we have been on the march all of the time…on the same march they had quit a fight with General [Nathan B.] Forrest, but cleaned him out quite easy. The fight took place at Parker's Cross Roads…I came in with the intention of seeing it throu but…there is a great many at the head of this that would not suit…what is the feeling of the people in your state about the war. Is there not a great many Vallandigham men there. I understand that there is plenty of men there that express their opinion quite freely. [They] say that they wood just as some vote for Jeff Davis as for Abe Lincoln. If you hear a man use such language as that and don't shoot him I will…think that you hant the clear grit. As long as the boys think their friends at home uphold them they [will] fight well…the new recruits…has done more harm than good in the way that they was distributed. It was all wrong putting them in with old regiments. If they old regiments had been consolidated it would have been better…direct to Corinth, Mss. 39 Regiment O. V. Vols., General Ross Division…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
