A great war-date CDV showing Private George W. Warner (1832-1923) who enlisted in Co. B, 20th Connecticut in August 1862. On July 3, 1863, Warner became the victim of friendly fire at the battle of Gettysburg. On that day, Warner's regiment, which was commanded by Col. Wooster, was ordered to advance against the Confederate position arrayed along Culp's Hill. During their advance, the 20th came under friendly artillery fire. Wooster sent word (mostly likely through Sgt. Maj. Tarr) to the battery commander to stop firing as they were firing upon his men. The battery commander refused and continued his errant barrage. Shortly after, an artillery shell fell into the ranks of the 20th wounding many men including Pvt. Warner. With that Col. Wooster became enraged and turned his regiment around (with their backs to the enemy) and sent word to the battery commander that if he did not stop firing he was going to charge the Union battery instead. After much confusion the battery redirected its fire and Col. Wooster was able to continue his advance, taking the Confederate position winning the day for the Union forces on that part of Meade's lines at Gettysburg. Afterwards, Warner returned home and fathered a large family that he supported through the sale of images of himself. He now lays at rest in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, Conn. This image is by Henry S. Peck, New Haven. Overall near fine.
