War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., Feb. 8, 1863 to his mother, in part: "…it is generally pretty healthy all round here in Beaufort….our company is as healthy if not more so than any in the regiment. There was but four on our sick list…this is about the toughest regiment in the whole South…they fought like Tigers at Pocotaligo, [S. C., 10/22/62]…we have no officers now in our regiment. Our colonel has not got back. Our Lieut. Col. has gone home and our major is under arrest…". VG
