War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., April 2, 1863, in part: "…our regiment was in Jacksonville, Florida. We left thre on 28th of March and sailed on board the Boston…we had a very good time while down to Jacksonville. I had a chance to…talk with the citizens a few of them were of Secesh feeling. Only twenty five families [live] in the place. The rest had moved away before we got there. While there we had one or two skirmishes and…had a brush with the enemy but none killed in our Reg…but two [were] killed and three wounded in the Eight Maine Reg by a shell bursting…into our lines. I was on picket about two miles from camp one night…and the Rebel pickets were within half a mile of us and we could see them on their posts. In the skirmish…we killed 3 of the Secesh and quite a number of wounded. The Colonel (Rust) of the Eight Maine after they came…assumed command of the city. If he had done his duty there we might have took the railroad…to Lake City. He was afraid of advancing and for not doing his duty…is now under arrest…when we left we burned most of the city leaving but a few houses standing. Six or eight families came off with us, some leaving all they had…others taking but a few with them. Some of them leaving…nice houses behind. We brought away thirty prisoners…as we go from place to place quite a number of citizens who are loyal [who] would come away if they could…there is a conscript law in Florida which forces the men to join their ranks from the age of 12 up to 40 years…we expect to go to James Island again. The Tenth Conn. and One Hundreth New York are there. They charged on a battery there and took it and held the Island…our Reg is going with the Conn. Battery and the Fourth New Hampshire…". VG
