A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Isaac Newton, Co. G, 93rd Ohio Vols. [POW Chickamauga, 9/19/63; DOD as POW Danville, Va., 12/06/63 and buried there], Lexington, KY., Sept. 6, 1862, to his father concerning their brush with Kirby Smith's Confederates near Lexington, Kentucky while he and Bragg were coordinating their invasion of Tennessee and Kentucky, in part: "…saturday evening we took up the line of march for Richmond marching all night arriving 13 miles of Richmond halting at the Ky river, one Co. going ahead to spy. They soon discovered the enemy on the hill. The enemy opening fire on them. Our men returning the fire killing 2 or 3. Our boys retreated unhurt…we about face and started back to Lexington. There was 4 or 5 Reg of us. The Rebels no. 4 or 5 times that No. We got back into camp about 12 o'clock…with the exception of several of the boys getting sun struck. We slept that night on [Henry] Clays estate. The next morning our Co. went out on picket on the Winchester road…we got a dispatch from head quarters ordering us…into town…the enemy were within 3 miles of us. For fear the baggage would fall into the enemy's hands our clothes that we could not…carry were thrown into a heap and burnt. I lost my dress coat…that evening we started on a retreat from Lexington…the rebels coming into town soon after we left & took 12 men out of our Co. that were in the hospital. [He gives here the names of those captured.]…there is 15 or 20,000 of us now together…we will move soon some place to recruit up and drill…".
