War-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Corp. Samuel C. Kirkpatrick [WIA in the face at Port Gibson, Miss., 5/1/63], Co. E, 11th Wisc. Vols., Camp Cairo, Sept. 30, 1861, in part: "…we are at Cairo. They had a fight over at Bird's Point last night. That is just across the river from here. There about five thousand soldiers here now. Up the Ohio river about 40 miles there is twenty thousand more and across the river there four thousand more…down the Mississippi at Norfolk there is eight thousand…we defy Old Jeff Davis to come here and we will give him hell…there aint many galls down here in Cairo. Sam you ought to be a soldier. It is the best life in [the] world…". Kirkpatrick's phonetic spelling has been corrected. Minor stains, else VG
