War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on United States Capitol, Washington patriotic stationery, by Corp. Samuel C. Kirkpatrick [WIA in the face at Port Gibson, Miss., 5/1/63], Co. E, 11th Wisc. Vols., Camp Harris, Victoria, Mo., Feb. 24, 1862, in part: "…we had a dance at the hotel on the 21 and a nice supper. Things went off very well. The citizens of this place throwed in and got a very nice Union flag which was hoisted on the 22 and is now floating over the town…when they hoisted it our Co. and Co. D fell in and marched down to the pole and formed in line of battle and fired 3 volleys. Miss. Vinard presented us with the flag. She is a very good looking girl. Frank was down on a visit. He was here when she brought out the flag. He said that he fell in love with her…it was fun…to see the citizens. They all got up in a squad and gave three cheers. We beat them so bad that they was ashamed and said that we was in better practice…we have got all of ou[r] logs hauled for our blockhouses…the folks on the Iron Mountain railroad has sent a petition to keep the 11 Reg on this road. They say that since we have come…that their sheep and hogs…has fared a good deal better…[Feb. 25]…there is a squad of men gone out on a scout…we are to have our pay the third of Mar. and another uniform. The news came…that Columbus was ours…". Kirkpatrick's phonetic spelling has been corrected. Negligible mouse chew affecting very little text, else VG
