A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William G. Sturgis [POW Gainesville, Fl., 8/17/64] Co. A, 75th Ohio Vols., Jacksonville, Fl., Jan. 1, 1864, in part: "…we have been brought back to the company again…we was today escorting the Genl. around the picket line…I am so vexed at Colonel [Andrew L.] Harris [WIA Gettysburg, brevet brig. gen. and Gov. of Ohio, 1906-1909] for having the courier line relieved that I can hardly do anything right . We have all drawn the seven shooter…called the Spencer Rifle…if they let us stay mounted our time will pass a great deal easier than…in infantry. Next Sept. our time will expire…[the] U. S. will never get me again unless I am drafted…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
