Unusual war-date printed “Officer’s Commission” 1pp. oblong octavo, Head Quarters Army of the American Eagle, Chicago, Illinois, April 29, 1865, and reads in part: “...This Commission is to Show That I, reposing Special Trust and Confidence in the Loyalty and Patriotism of Hiram E. Dewey, have appointed him a Corporal in the Army of the American Eagle, to rank from April 29, 1865.” With nice Eagle in background. Printed information on the Army of the American Eagle on verso. Fine condition. Alfred Sewell created this organization to raise funds for the U.S. Sanitary Commission by selling "beautiful album pictures in oil colors" of Live Eagle, the soldier bird. This eagle, named Abe by Capt. Wolf was mustered into Company C of the 8th Wisconsin Regiment. A child could purchase pictures of the eagle singly for 15 cents; if they organized a club pre-paid/post-paid orders could me made for ten to one address for $1, or one hundred for $9. This document indicates that Helen Ladd sold 10 pictures. Sewell is better known for fund-raising for the U.S. Sanitary Commission through subscription sales of "The Little Corporal" in the same manner.
