Another good war-date letter, 4pp. 4to., written by "J. J. Smith", United States Military Railroad freight agent, Alpine, Tenn. Feb. 8, 1865 addressed to Brevet Brigadier General John Corson Smith as lieutenant colonel of the 96th Illinois Vols., in small part: ""…I saw posted up at Bridgeport [Alabama]…a notice. to all who had filed claims against the U. S. Government to make proof at Nashville…in March 1865 or the same would be construed abandoned…does this have any reference to a case like mine…I lost by the Federal army on its march through Northern East Alabama in Sept. 1863 & again in Oct. & Nov. all my crop of corn, potatoes & other vegetables, hay, cattle & sheep…[worth] about $1200.00. There sat board of claims at Bridgeport last spring…I…had no notice of it…thus I have let the matter rest until now…it is a duty I owe my family make an effort to get that which is justly due. My wife & 7 little ones are living hard…can you not…give me the light necessary to guide me to the bright spot…I have no fears about proving my loyalty. I can tell what Division…took my crop & what Brigade fed on it the first day, but…how many acres there were, the should be measured…that region has for some time been infested with raiders & guerrillas. Any aid that you can give…will be duly appreciated…". Near fine.
