A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edward B. Holt, [severely wounded in the leg at Drewry's Bluff, Va., May 13, 64] Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Wilmington, N. C., April 27, 1865, in part: "…if a man is sick here the boys do not mind him and they cannot do anything for him…the medicine we get is not fit for a human…for it is so strong it will kill or cure immediately…we drew clothing…so we can…look quite respectable in the sight of the Wilmington folks…Lafe [his brother] got his commission yesterday as 1st Lieut. whether he will get mustered or not I don't know though…I think he will…soon have on his shoulder straps…Col. Bedel has come back and is in command of the Regt…we have nothing definite from Johnston but he will soon be forced to run or surrender…the cars run from here to Goldsboro. Part of the regt are guarding the railroad…tell father his sons are expecting to be home to help harvesting…there is a display of the fire companies composed of negroes dressed in white in honor of President Lincoln. How sad it is for the country to lose such a man. It is felt by all the men and they know he worked for their interest…". VG to near fine.
