A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Henry A. Peck, Co. I, 10th Conn. Vols. [WIA Deep Bottom, Va., 8/14/64], "Camp 10th C. V., Jan. 29, 1865", in part: "…we are still encamped before Richmond not being of the forces who went with Gen. Terry to Fort Fisher though I should not be surprised…if we were ordered down there. The news of his capture of Fort Fisher sent a thrill of joy through the troops here and it gives the death blow to poor Butler…since he first was ordered to report [to] Lowell [Mass.] I have heard no regrets of his departure, but on the contrary everybody is well pleased to get rid of him…it would have been a good thing for the service if he had been removed months ago…I hope to never hear of the Beast again. New Haven may well feel proud of her Gen. Terry for he has done splendidly during the whole campaign and stands high in the army…everything [is] pretty quiet…expected a fight one day last week…the rebel rams came down the river and tried their luck [to break through Grant's naval blockade of the James River at Trent's Reach on January 23rd] which did not turn out very well for them. They having one sunk [CSS Drewry by a shell into her magazine], two more run aground [ironclads CSS Virginia No. 2 and CSS Richmond] but were got off by them that night. The whole army was under arms all that day expecting a land attack but we were disappointed…I hope to see this rebellion crushed and the Johnnies brought to terms…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
