Interesting war-date 4pp. 8vo., ink inscribed Union soldier’s letter, on patriotic letterhead, written by Pvt. Edward J. Rinebold, Co. C, 141st Penn. Vols. “Virginia, Sept. 26, 1862” concerning the battle of Antietam, and of a comrade who shot himself to get out of the army, in part: “…there was a fellow…his name is Salsbury. He wanted to go home so bad…he went…and loaded his gun and shot himself through the foot. He thought that they would discharge him…I don’t think that I would take a discharge if they would give me one…we have to dig rifle pits and go out on picket and…guard…the camp. We hear the cannon everyday but not when they are a fighting. They fire them for a habit…Captain Ingham [James B. Ingham 50th Penn. Vols.] was killed in this last battle…”. Much more interesting content with his phonetic spelling corrected. Also, included is the original patriotic transmittal envelope without stamp. Rinebold served faithfully at the battles of Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg only to die of disease Feb. 27, 1864. Some soiling, else very good.
