DAVIS, Jefferson (1807-1889) was an American soldier and politician, and was the President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, 1861 to 1865. He took personal charge of the Confederate war plans but was unable to find a strategy to defeat the more populous and industrialized Union. His diplomatic efforts failed to gain recognition from any foreign country. At home he paid little attention to the collapsing Confederate economy; the government printed more and more paper money to cover the war's expenses, leading to runaway inflation and devaluation of the Confederate Dollar. Signed Photograph, “Jeffn: Davis” being a nice carte de visite of the President of the Confederate States of America, housed in frame, 7-1/2”x8-3/4” with paper label on verso bearing “Wm. H. Powell” of New York stamp, and late 19th century ink manuscript that reads “Presented...in 1866 by John R. Thompson of Virginia...” John Reuben Thompson (1823-1873) was an American poet, journalist, editor and publisher. In 1847, he became the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, and in 1859 editor of The Southern Field and Fireside in Augusta, Georgia. Thompson did not take part in the Civil War due to health reasons. Instead, he went to London, from where he supported the Confederacy by writing articles in English magazines. Fine condition.
