War-date albumen photograph of the “U.S. Sanitary Commission Lodge, for Invalid Soldiers, Alexandria, Va.” with imprint at bottom “Entered according to Act of Congress , in the year 1862, by GARDNER & GIBSON...” Image is 3-3/4”x2-3/4” mounted to larger card. Small nick at bottom right corner, else very good condition. Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) was a Scottish photographer who emigrated to the United States in 1856, where he began to work full-time in that profession. He is best known for his photographs of the American Civil War, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, and the execution of the conspirators to Lincoln's assassination. James F. Gibson was probably the least known of the Civil War photographers. He was born in New York City. He learned the art under Brady. Gibson eventually photographed Gen. McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, Seven Days Battles, Battle of Gaines' Mill, and Battle of Malvern Hill.
