THOMAS W. SHERMAN (1813-1879) was a career Union officer who first served against the Seminole Indians in Florida, was present during the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War and became a brigadier general on May 17, 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War. He commanded the land forces during the Port Royal, South Carolina expedition in 1862 and during the siege of Port Hudson the following year he was severely wounded in the right leg causing its amputation and a premature publication of his obituary. He recovered and remained active in Louisiana on administrative duty. Published by E. & H. T. Anthony, N. Y. C. from a Brady negative. Mistakenly identified in period in on the verso as William T. Sherman, else VG
