SAMUEL FRANCIS DU PONT (1803-1865) was appointed midshipman by President Madison at age twelve. Du Pont received his education at sea while aboard the USS Franklin. In 1833 he married his first cousin, served in the Mexican War and at the outbreak of the Civil War was appointed president of the naval board set up to develop a naval plan against the Confederacy. He was appointed rear admiral in July 1862 and commanded the Union fleet in its operations against Charleston in 1863 and was relieved of command just one year after making rear admiral at his own request.
